On January 22, 2020, Tisbury community members participated in Visioning Workshops lead by New Vista Design and Tappé Architects. One workshop took place in the morning at the Tisbury Emergency Services Facility and another took place in the evening at the Tisbury Senior Center. Each workshop was a collaborative session designed to engage community members in a discussion of their educational, architectural and community-related priorities for the renovation of the Tisbury Elementary School. An additional Student Visioning Workshop for a group of Tisbury School students in grades 2-8 took place in the afternoon. A public meeting was held to to introduce the complete building project team to the community. Presentation and topics of discussion included an overview of the history of the Tisbury School building, an introduction to the Owner’s Project Managers and Architects, and a discussion about the community’s priorities for the project. Community visioning workshops are scheduled for January 2020.
Three responses to Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for an Architect/Designer opened. Interview questions developed and interviews scheduled for respondents: Turowski2 Architects Arrowstreet Tappé Architects Interviews of Architect/Designer candidates took place in the Kathrine Cornell Theater. Tisbury School Building Committee voted to approve Tappé Architects as the preferred firm. A presentation was made to a joint meeting of the Board of Selectmen and the Tisbury School Committee. A unanimous vote approved the selection of Tappé Architects. Building Committee member Alice Robinson resigns and is replaced by Sean DeBettencourt as the Tisbury School Grades 5-8 representative on the committee.
The Town of Tisbury and the School Building Committee have released a Request for Qualifications for Designers. The project team held a briefing and site walk-through on October 23rd to tour the existing school. Request for Qualifications for architect/designer discussed, refined and published. Continued discussion of grant opportunities. Tisbury School Education Program updated and presented to TSBC and School Committee. Discussion and revising of building project website. Establishment of an email address for TSBC which can be accessed on the project website. Formation of communications working group to assist Daedalus with website and community outreach. Currently this group is made up of TSBC members. Architecture learning sessions conducted by Peter Gearhart.
Interviews of Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) candidates and selection of Daedalus Projects, Inc., as OPM. Firm agrees to serve as OPM for the building project as well as for the emergency repairs needed immediately at the school. These are separate parts of the contract to be negotiated by the Town. OPM presents a draft project timeline and public outreach strategies which are adjusted with committee input. Request for Qualifications for architect/designer discussed and refined.

Financial learning session conducted by Jon Snyder, Town Accountant and review of economic data from Martha’s Vineyard Commission. John Custer leads the committee through a review of the Tisbury School Education Program. Begin discussions of TSBC mission statement for town and project websites. Communication from the School Committee concerning the deteriorated conditions at the school. Committee agrees to remote meeting participation by members unable to attend scheduled meetings.
The Tisbury School Building Committee is formed with nine members, representing the Tisbury Board of Selectmen (one member), Tisbury School Committee (one member), Tisbury School (3 members) and four members from the community at large. Committee meetings begin on June 6. Rachel Orr is voted by the committee as chairperson, Reade Milne as vice-chairperson and Alice Robinson as recording secretary. Meeting dates are set for 5:00 PM on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month at the Emergency Facilities Building lower level meeting room. Changes in date, time or location will be posted at the Town Hall at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. Discussions begin on creating the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for an Owner’s Project Manager (OPM), as required by law, in cooperation with Jay Grande, Chief Procurement Officer for the Town of Tisbury.
The Select Board and School Committee solicited interested persons to participate on the Tisbury School Building Committee.
Town Meeting approves warrant article for four hundred thousand dollars ($400,000) to fund: owner’s project manager services, and architectural, design, engineering, cost estimating, bidding, construction management, and other related services for the renovation of and addition to the Tisbury School facility.
